Cottage Cheese Pie: A Low-Fat, Healthy Dessert that is Simple to Make

Basically, cottage cheese is a surprisingly healthy food that makes a surprisingly delicious pie.

It actually tastes very similar to rice pudding and is a favorite of many children. There’s even more good news -- cottage cheese pie is quite simple and inexpensive to create. Making cottage cheese pie only requires a few basic ingredients. Gather together cottage cheese, flour, sugar, salt, eggs, milk, cinnamon, and a pie crust (graham cracker crusts and pastry crusts are both delicious options).

First, mix the cottage cheese until it is smooth. Next add 2 TBSP flour, 1 cup of sugar, one-fourth tsp. of salt, two eggs, and a sprinkling of cinnamon. Once these ingredients are blended slowly add the milk and keep mixing.

Next, transfer the cottage cheese mix to the pie crust. Place the pie on a cookie sheet to catch drips from cooking. Cinnamon may be sprinkled on top of the pie for added flavor. Finally, bake the pie for ten minutes at 400 degrees.

Then lower the temperature to 300 degrees and continue cooking for an additional one hour plus fifteen minutes. The pie needs to set before serving so that it can firm up. For added flavor lemon juice can be sprinkled on top of the pie -- the citrus mixed with the sweetness of the sugar and the savory flavors of the cottage cheese makes a refreshing treat.

Homemade cottage cheese pie is also delicious with spices such as nutmeg or fresh fruit like berries, strawberries or peaches. Cottage cheese pie is a very adaptable dessert that can be changed by the addition of many different fruits and/or spices. It is appropriate as a traditional Thanksgiving pie or for any other special meals.
